Autograph letter signed from A.C. Swinburne, The Pines, Putney Hill, to Matthew Arnold [manuscript], 1880 May 13.

Swinburne sends Arnold his new book of verse, indicating that Arnold's "kindly acknowledgment of [his] last year's book on Shakespeare encourages [him] to do so." Refers to Arnold's article on the Comédie Française and expresses his "conviction that Goethe's verdict on Hernani is worth just exactly as much, and for exactly the same reasons, as Voltaire's on Hamlet."
